What you think about calling people ma’am, I am interested to know. It is a mostly using word which is used for calling women. In my perception some people feel old when called ma’am. Ma’am is somewhat outdated and a contraction of Madame. It is a sign of respect & should never cause offence. It is usually used for older or married women and today may not in common trend usage. It is also depending where you live. Some peoples are correct in thinking it makes a person feel old.
Ms. is a correct honorific in social and business situations but it’s too misinterpreted sometimes, usually by older women who think ma’am is not suitable for her. You might call a younger person miss. Either honorific is a sign of respect. When in doubt, ask the person ‘’ what would you like me to call you?’’
